Renewal-defence template · Champion attrition
Your client champion just left
Your day-one stakeholder Slacks you to say they're moving on. There's no warm handover. The account team you've been working with is about to be reassigned. If you wait for them to come to you, you've already lost.
The receipt

Account lapsed at renewal. Total attrition cost: low five figures of TCV. Documented as the most preventable loss in the book - the re-engagement note below was drafted three weeks too late.

Reframes a goodbye email into a handover opportunity. The champion is more useful in their last week than in their first three at the new place.
Leads with the human note before the ask. The 'I'm in for any reference' line is currency - it's the reason they'll write the favour.
Hints at being 'a tool the new owner picks up on Day 1', but mostly defensive - that's appropriate here.
Offers to draft the protect-this note in 30 seconds - small but specific. Demonstrate is light here because the receipts come later.
Two clear asks: a three-line email and a named-person intro before [date]. Both are easy 'yes' actions in the champion's last week.
The anti-pattern
Replying 'so sorry to hear, do let us know who picks it up.' You've now made the handover the client's job, in a week where they have a hundred handovers. The account goes silent for six weeks and lapses at renewal because no one inherited the relationship.
